I’ve been studying the language of design since about the same time as I was picking up the English language. Leafing through my atlas was how I learned to recognise letterforms, and it was also how I learned to read design. That yellow on the page stands for sand dunes containing rich oasis’, where lions, elephants and antelopes meet to drink water and eat each other. I was captivated by how simple clues held so much information, and this is where my fascination with graphic design began.
My interest in design and art and creativity has been pretty much lifelong, but I’d chart the beginning of my professional practise to 2013 when I was hired by my first regular client – the Bread & Roses – during my final year at university. I’ve since had 9 years of experience as a freelance graphic designer, crafting brands, books, proposals, posters, leaflets, logos and loads more that doesn’t necessarily alliterate. Whilst the forms and applications of my work has been varied, I’ve always had an unchanging objective – engaging clarity. Design should stay true to its purpose, be clear and functional, but it’s also nice if it makes people smile.
Alongside providing quality design for my clients, I also pride myself on delivering work quickly, communicating clearly, and always taking an interest in a client’s business and ideals. That last part is one of the best parts of the job, graphic design is a brilliant vehicle for learning about people and pursuits you might otherwise be very unlikely to discover.
